You were handed an auto-injector and told to come back in a year.

So you read every label. You pack separate food for every party. You train the grandparents, the daycare, the babysitter. And you still hold your breath at every meal that someone else made.

Avoidance keeps your child safe today. It does nothing to change the allergy. Treatment can.

Meet your allergist

Nana Mireku, MD, FACAAI, FAAAAI

"I knew exactly what was happening. But in that moment I wasn't an allergist. I was a mom in my kitchen."

I made both of my kids a peanut butter sandwich. They sat there with their legs dangling, kicking, loving it. Five minutes later my daughter was sneezing uncontrollably, then itching, then vomiting and coughing. That night she needed several doses of epinephrine and required an overnight stay in the hospital.

I kept thinking about every parent who had told me this same story. I can imagine how terrified they were. That is why I built Safe2Bite: so your family has more than an auto-injector and a list of foods to fear. We have treatment options for you and your family.

  • Board-certified pediatric allergist-immunologist
  • Practice devoted to food allergy care and  treatment: OIT and SLIT
  • Author of the children's book Brave Bites
Why starting young matters

A toddler's immune system is still learning. That is the window.

In the NIH-funded IMPACT trial, children ages 1 to 3 received peanut oral immunotherapy or placebo. The treated group did dramatically better, and the youngest children were the most likely to reach remission.

Jones SM, et al. The Lancet, 2022. Results are from a clinical trial of peanut OIT; individual results vary.

How treatment works

Tiny, measured amounts of the food, increased slowly, until your child's body stops treating it as a threat. Nothing is hidden from you. You will know what we are doing and why at every visit.

1

Consult and testing

We confirm what your child is truly allergic to, review their history, and tell you plainly whether treatment is a fit.

2

First dose, in clinic

Your child takes the first dose with our team beside them. You go home with a written emergency plan and a dose you are confident giving.

3

Daily at home, step up with us

One small dose a day at home. About every two weeks you come in and we raise it under supervision. Most families build up over roughly 10 months.

4

Maintenance and a bigger life

A steady daily amount keeps protection in place. Birthday cake, restaurants and daycare stop being emergencies waiting to happen.

Questions parents ask first

Is this safe for a baby or toddler?

OIT is real medicine with real risks. Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can happen during treatment. That is why every dose increase happens in our clinic under supervision, why you leave with a written emergency plan, and why we only move forward when your child is ready. In clinical trials, treatment has been generally well tolerated in toddlers. We will walk you through the risks for your child specifically before you decide. We have been practicing OIT for the past 15 years.

How young can my child start?

We treat children from about 9 months old. Research points to the first three years as the most responsive window, so earlier is usually better. Older children and teens are welcome too, and we offer both OIT and SLIT.

Will my child be cured?

No honest allergist can promise a cure. The goal is desensitization: protection from accidental exposure and, for many children, eating the food as part of a normal diet. Some young children reach remission. At your consult we tell you what is realistic for your child.

How long does it take?

Most families come in about every two weeks for roughly 10-12 months while the dose builds, with one small dose at home each day. After that your child moves to a steady maintenance dose.

Does insurance cover it?

Office visits are billed to your insurance. We are in network with BCBS of Texas, Cigna, Aetna and UnitedHealthcare. Program fee covers services insurance does not. You get your exact cost at the consult, and CareCredit is accepted.

My child has more than one food allergy. Can you still help?

Yes. Many of our patients do. At your consult we map every allergen and build a personalized customized plan for which to treat first and which can be treated together.

Safe to bite. Free to eat.

Every month of waiting is a month of the window closing. One conversation tells you whether treatment is right for your child.
